QUICK SCREENING

Answer yes to all these and you may qualify as a resident!

  • I am at least 18 years of age.

  • I have a primary care physician, provider handling medication management, dentist and therapist. If you do not currently have these then you need to be in the process of securing each.

  • I am willing and able to participate in mandatory daily house meetings (M-Sun), and community life for the duration of my stay.

  • I am physically independent. I do not require nursing care. I am physically capable of contributing to household work (chores, meal preparation, etc.). Please note, our house is ADA compliant, and we have residents that use wheelchairs or walkers. The key is that no matter what a resident's physical abilities they are completely independent and able to contribute to the house.

  • I have already secured or am in the process of securing SSI or SSDI benefits.

  • I am able and willing to pay 30% of my income as rent, plus $210 to contribute to communal food and supplies.

  • I am stable--I have had no recent violent outbursts. I have been cooperative with medical care providers treatment plans for at least 30 days.

  • I am willing to be screened for past violent history to ensure we keep Casa Milagro a safe place.  I am not on the sex offender registry. I do not have a violent felony record.

  • I have been drug and alcohol free for at least 3 months. I am willing to maintain sobriety for the duration of my stay. This includes medical cannabis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer any services to residents?

Yes! We provide Supportive Services. Staff are here 24/7 seven days a week to offer support. Key examples of what we provide are medication administration, case management, advocacy with medical providers if needed, recreational fieldtrips, art studio activities, menu planning, cooking instruction, conflict resolution, assistance with obtaining benefits, yearly and quarterly assessments to support goal achievement, etc.

Do you have apartment units?

No, we have no apartments. Casa Milagro is a large house; each resident has their own private bedroom with a shared bathroom for every three rooms. There are common areas, kitchen, living room, dining room, art studio, activity room, and front and back yard. The video above shows two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Each room comes with a bed, dresser, sheets/blankets, and a towel set.

Are you "housing first?"

No, each resident has to be committed to sobriety of all substances both illegal and legal and have documented evidence of at least three months of sobriety.  Documented evidence can be a letter from a treatment center, medical or behavioral health provider.

Are you a group home?

No, everyone who lives here functions independently. It is a requirement for every resident to be in charge of their finances (they can have a payee), daily activities of living (grooming, bathing, laundry, cooking, etc.), transportation (Santa Fe Ride, Lyft, Uber or their own car), completing household chores, cooking, appointments, etc.

Do you offer skilled nursing?

No, none of our staff are medical providers. All residents must be physically independent and not require any physical assistance.

Are you a long-term care facility?

No, we are not.

Are you far out of town?

No, we are on the Southside of town, near the crossroads of Cerrillos (Hwy 14) and the NM 599. There is an Allsup's Store and bus stop 1/2 mile from the house. The Rail Runner train stop is 1.3 miles away. The super Walmart is 2.4 miles away. Santa Fe Place Mall is 3.8 miles away.

Can I submit an incomplete application?

No, all the information on the application and requested documents are necessary to make a determination if a person qualifies.

Is marijuana allowed since it is legal in NM or if someone has a medical card?

Casa Milagro is a sober living house. Both alcohol and marijuana while legal are still not allowed on premises. Residents cannot be under the influence of any substance.

Do you provide Medication Management?

Yes, we have a Medication Administration program and a New Mexico Board of Pharmacy Class 3 License.  All medications (both prescribed and over the counter) and supplements are double locked in the staff office. It is a requirement for residents to participate in Medication Administration, be medication compliant, have a medication provider, have a doctor's prescription for everything including supplements and over the counter medications. Doctor prescribed medication prescriptions may be sent to Highlands Pharmacy, and they deliver the medications weekly.  Residents may also pick up their own medications at the pharmacy of their choice.

Do you allow pets?

Many animals over the years have lived at Casa Milagro. We believe it adds to healing and joy. Pets will be considered; they have to be current on shots, and the owner has to take good care of them. There is an additional pet deposit required. Currently, due to insurance coverage we cannot allow pet dogs or companion animal dogs. We do allow service dogs (a dog trained to do a specific task for an individual).

Does someone have to be homeless?

Yes, we only house people who are either literally homeless or chronically homeless. (Click this link for a definition of those terms

Do people pay rent? Can they have a job? How much monthly income can they have?

Yes, people pay 30% of their monthly income plus a flat $210 monthly Supplement fee that covers food and household supplies. People can have a job but to qualify for housing their income must meet federal income guidelines of "Very Low Income," $32,050/year ($2,670/month) or "Extremely Low Income," $19,250/year ($1,604/month). However, once someone has signed a lease, they do not have to meet the "Very Low or Extremely Low" income standards, they can make more than these amounts, but their 30% share of the rent will always be based on current income. â€‹

Is there a lease?

Yes, we are a HUD Section 811 Project Rental Assistance Contract property. This means the section 8 vouchers are tied to the property and do not follow the person. Our HUD PRAC grant pays the remaining 70% of the lease. Every resident is required to sign a HUD lease with us and provide a security deposit equal to their monthly rent amount. There is an extra security deposit for pets.
